A word from the Co-Chairs
Welcome to the website of the Burnaby Task Force On Homelessness
We hope that this website will provide you with important information about homelessness in Burnaby
Since the formation of the Burnaby Task Force Force On Homelessness in January 2005 we have seen many positive changes in Burnaby. The Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness leads local initiatives to END homelessness in Burnaby.
Due to the expertise and diligence of Progressive Housing Society, the faith community and citizen volunteers we now have in Burnaby a Homeless Outreach Program including a Mobile Outreach Van and an Outreach Resource Centre providing access to Outreach workers, medical care, bagged lunches, toiletries clothing and assistance with housing searches, obtaining identification, working with ministry representatives..
Also thanks to Lookout Emergency Aid Society and community partners we have in Burnaby an Extreme Weather Shelter which is open on a weather dependent basis between October and April when the weather is deemed too unsafe for people to be outside.
Our participation in the Greater Vancouver Homeless count has shown that our numbers of Burnaby citizens who are challenged with homelessness has risen by 110% from 2005 and 2008. We will be working with the Regional Steering Committee to organize the next homeless count in Burnaby, scheduled for March 2011.
There has been an increased awareness of the issue of homelessness in Burnaby and as a result there are many schools, faith communities, businesses and citizens who are actively working with us to begin to provide our Burnaby neighbors with services they deserve. The partnerships and varied perspectives of the task force membership and community supporters are the key to continuing on to improve this situation in Burnaby.
There are many areas in which we continue to strive for change: housing, showers/laundry, establishing a full time Outreach Resource Centre, improved access to medical care, improved income for those who are homeless and those at risk of homelessness.
The Burnaby Task Force On Homelessness is committed to working with all levels of government, social service agencies, business and faith communities and concerned citizens to ensure the provision of housing, support services, and health care to people who are dealing with homelessness or at risk of homelessness in Burnaby.
If you are interested in the issue of homelessness and wish to help, to donate or to volunteer your time, please send an email to info@burnabyhomelesstaskforce.org and subscribe to this website to be updated on current information. Your support is greatly needed and appreciated. By working together we can continue to make a difference.
